A Day in the Life of Junior Junction

A common question new parents have is “What does a typical day look like?“.  At Junior Junction, each day is thoughtfully planned to provide children with a balance of learning, play, rest and nurturing care. Here’s a glimpse into a typical day and how we support your child’s growth every step of the way.

Morning Welcome & Settling In

As soon as our families walk into reception they are greeted by  welcoming staff at the front desk and our old-school chalkboard announcing today’s yummy nutritious menu, complimented by delicious smells wafting from the kitchen.

The day begins with a warm transition for the children (and caregivers!) led by our experienced, qualified staff. We know mornings can be busy and we’re here to help make a seamless start to the day.

The children are usually very keen to start the day! Often leading the way to their room – Hiranga (Babies), Komitimiti (Toddlers), Arahanga (Pre-school). They place their bags a in assigned cubbies outside the classroom (contain a change of clothes, sun hat and a water bottle).

Any toys the children may bring from home are kept outside the room and returned to them at the end of the day.

Free Play & Prepared Activities

Our teachers arrive early to set up a new learning spaces within the room, as well as outdoor activities. The children are free to explore and engage with any activity they choose.

The intention is to promote new ideas, exploration and social engagement through hands-on experience. Each child is observed by our qualified ECE staff who respond specifically to your child’s needs. Parents are kept up with their child’s progress through our internal parent portal. Our caregivers also speak to teachers daily during drop-offs and pick-ups about how their children are doing.

Children ease into the rhythm of the day with free outdoor play, weather permitting, and indoor play. Each room opens to a safe, fun, well-equipped playground.

Fresh air and movement are essential for growing bodies and minds. Outdoor time may include:

  • climbing and balancing
  • ball games
  • sand and water play
  • gardening
  • nature walks

Fueling Up with Healthy Meals

Healthy eating is a big priority. We believe that good nutrition begins early and requires a daily, balanced variety of all five food groups: vegetables/legumes, fruits, grains, dairy, and protein. Essential building blocks include iron and protein for growth, calcium/vitamin D for bones, and healthy fats for brain development.

Our in-house chefs create a variety of nutritious homemade meals on a weekly rotation. Seasonal fruit and vegitables feature predominantly. We provide a yummy morning and afternoon tea as well as a cooked lunch. On Fridays preschool children are encouraged to bring a packed lunch to help prepare them for their school routine.

The trolly full of delicious morsals enter the room after the children have sat at their tables. Teachers assist with serving and guiding the children through their meal. Often the food is so good it becomes very quiet until bellies are nice and full!

Mealtimes are relaxed and social, helping children to:

  • develop self-help skills
  • practice good table manners
  • try new foods
  • engage in conversation

Focused & Self-Guided Learning

Teacher-guided group learning activities such as reading from a storybook or singing songs that instill numeracy skills occur in the morning and afternoon. We also host guests from the local library, or other organizations who lead a specialised learning activity with the children. This month local farmer Fleur Cutfield will be bringing some of her farm animals to our Kumeū center for the children to engage with and learn about.

At Junior Junction we also believe children learn best through -hands-on experiences. This is often a self-guided journey, observed and assisted by our qualified teachers. Each child’s milestones and discoveries are documented and shared with caregivers.  Inspired by approaches such as Te Whakiri, New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, we design activities that nurture the whole child, which may include:

  • art and creative expression
  • early literacy and numeracy activities
  • science exploration
  • cultural learning experiences (such as Matariki – Māori New Year)
  • outdoor discovery

Rest & Quiet time

Rest and downtime is essential for growing minds and bodies. After lunch, children enjoy quiet activities or rest time. Some children nap, even preschoolers, while others engage in calming esperiencs such as reading or puzzles.

Afternoon Activities & Home Time

In the afternoon we continue with creative and exploratory activities, often following children’s interests from earlier in the day. During pick-up times, teachers update caregivers about their child’s experiences, achievements, and special moments from the day.

Why Routine Matters

A predictable routine helps children feel safe and secure. It builds confidence, encourages independence, and creates a positive learning environment where children can thrive. At Junior Junction every part of th day is thoughtfully planned, but always flexible enoughto follow a child’s interests and needs.
